Who we are

Rennie | Scurr | Adendorff occupy a unique position as a specialist heritage advisory to the architectural industry and external boards. Our office offers a fully integrated service including architecture, heritage and interior design. However, our flexible business model allows for engagement at any point. Each team can function as a stand-alone silo should the client require only one service.

Our History & Awards

Rooted in Cape Town, Rennie|Scurr|Adendorff was founded by John Rennie in 1982. In the past four decades, we have grown into an award-winning firm with a wealth of experience across a diverse portfolio of clients and projects. A large body of work, the core of which is rooted in adaptive reuse and working in sensitive contexts, informed by 35 years of collective experience in testing boundaries, forms the solid base from which we work today. Our offering now includes three specialised teams: architecture, heritage and interior design.

Our Philosophy

Rennie|Scurr|Adendorff has a diverse portfolio with projects in residential, commercial, social and public sectors. These include three bank chains, seven restaurants, theatres, art galleries, luxury homes, universities, schools, churches and cathedrals. The Rennie|Scurr|Adendorff philosophy runs through each of these projects as a common thread. Form always follows function. As architects, we see ourselves as collaborators with time. We are informed by the past, but embrace the progressive. We seek to leave an inspiring legacy. We specialise in innovative and truly creative solutions.

Our team looks at space in terms of its value - beyond its heritage merit. It is in discovering and flexing the circulation and order of a space, relevant to its modern function, which allows for its potential to be unlocked. This lays the foundation for a space that works to fulfill the brief. Building limitations, heritage considerations and budget constraints add to the degree of creative skill required to re-imagine an existing space. The diversity of our projects, clients and team members adds a freshness and relevance to our work, in which we take pride. As we engage, each party enriches the other.

Sustainability

At Rennie|Scurr|Adendorff, ecological practice is not just about solar panels - it is layers deep. We approach sustainability from both a practical and philosophical level. We re-use, repurpose and avoid the unnecessary demolition of existing structure. We take advantage of the timeless design principles of thermal mass and passive cooling systems often present in historic structures. We preserve the fabric and memory of the old, facilitating a sustainable lifecycle. Through recycling urban spaces, we reveal value for today and tomorrow.

Collaboration

Rennie|Scurr|Adendorff is a medium-sized firm with the engagement and personality of a small, responsive team. Our greatest strength lies in the energy and experience of each team member. We have learnt that the finest results are produced by actively collaborating with our client as a cohesive team.

Work with us

Our architecture and interiors are defined by the client’s brief, as opposed to a signature style. We aim to creatively interpret and practically resolve our client’s vision, and so achieve a sustainable, inspiring space. Our team shares a passion for people, and for understanding how each enjoys to live life to the full. The first step we take in a project is to determine the “rules”.

Our up-front conversations with our clients help our team glean a clear picture of the needs of the client. It is this picture that defines the project guidelines. The stronger this foundation, the better the outcome. Our forward-looking business environment embraces a contemporary world-view: we are built for today.

Our Projects

Depending on the unique needs of each project, our three specialist teams: architecture, heritage & interior design may collaborate, offering a fully-integrated service, or function individually as stand-alone offerings. Our flexible business model is built around a commitment to address each project’s specific requirements with an optimal outcome.

Our Clients

Our diverse client base ranges from large corporates, governmental departments, educational institutions to niche speciality theatres, restaurants and hotels. We partner with clients in a holistic sense, beyond the architectural (ROI, marketing, business strategy). At the most personal level are the homes we create for private individuals. All our clients (architectural, heritage, interior) benefit from our passion for understanding their unique needs and tailor-making every aspect of their experience with us.
